“Yes politics in Nigeria is very rough, but we cannot leave it in the hands of people who don’t fear God – #POI”.Dr. Charles Omorodion’s rejoinder to the sponsored piece by one Nseobong Okon- Ebong in a Nigerian daily makes an interesting read. Going through I was fascinated by his conclusion which called for more if not all believers as it were, to join politics.Taking a cue from his submission, it goes without saying that the, “Holy Bible instructs believers to impact the world around them with God’s precepts and for His glory. Believers are called to have an influence for God in their chosen field”.In Matthew 5:13,14, the Saviour himself asked believers, ” You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men”.The Saviour also likened believers to, “… the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.”These scriptures Dr Omorodion rightly acknowledged give believers authority to be part of the politics of their times, as well as evangelism and discipleship. No wonder he said, “The way to change the direction of a nation is for believers to be involved”.Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu ( POI) himself has been a strong advocate of believers involvement in politics. He sees it as a Mission: ” If people who know God are involved in our political system, things will change”. He believes therefore that Christians need to get actively involved in politics, and see it as a mission.”…we must begin to encourage decent men and women, not only Christians, there are our Muslims brothers that are decent, people who fear God. When the right persons are put in positions, not because his father is a cult member, things will take its normal place”.For Ize-Iyamu, “If you are a good Christian and you study your Bible very well, you will see men of God who are politicians. If you translate it, God is telling you that, when my servant is in government, people will rejoice or enjoy total freedom, but when the unbelievers are in government, people will suffer and mourn, simple”.He once said that God expressly admonished his children in the Book of Proverbs 29:2 as follows: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, when the wicked rules, the people groan.” He says the righteous are those who work closely with God and obey his commandments”. Authority on the other hand refers to the government.Ironically for centuries, many believers have labelled politics as a dirty game, and not wanting to get stained, have left it for those who like dirty! And who are these dirty players? For Ize-Iyamu, “These are people who understand what government is all about, they tend to be stronger when they are in government, and they become untouchable, they are able to get jobs, contracts, they go to court, but because they have people who are members of the same cults, they give them signs and the judge knows what to do”.Observers agree that there is therefore no greater time than now for believers to join politics and play it in Nigeria, because it can only get clean this way.”As a Pastor, there is nothing that I have not seen in politics, they have made several attempts on my life, blackmailed me, threatened me, told all kinds of lies against me, betrayed me, in fact so many bad side of politics”, says Ize-Iyamu.Records abound of Nigerian politicians because they are mostly unbelievers, taking oaths just to get power! This is one aspect that forces a lot of Christians to label politics, dirty. But as Ize-Iyamu sees it, “…a mission field is a place that is dirty”, so believers, “must go in there and sanitise it”.This is in reference to Isaiah 6, where the Saviour Jesus said, ” the government shall be upon his shoulders”; so it is believers’ duty to carry government on our shoulders. As Dr Omorodion succinctly puts it, “….Every Herod, every Hitler and every Goliaths standing in the way of the socio-political advancement of Edo State shall be crushed and defeated by God Almighty – Amen!. This is our prayer for 2020.
