The Benin Monarch has advocated for the establishment of Royal Palace Task-Force to further combat human trafficking and irregular immigration in Nigeria.
Omo N’Oba N’Edo made this statement when the Swedish Ambassador, His Excellency, Carl Michael Grans paid him a courtesy call in his Palace along with Swedish Television team
Oba of Benin said the Royal Palace Task-Force will be saddled with the responsibilities of embarking on advocacy enlightenment campaigns to rural areas in Edo State.
It will be made up of International Organization for Migration (IOM), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and Oba Ewuare II Foundation with the Swedish Embassy collaboration.
Recalling the events that propelled him to revoke curses placed on human trafficking victims by their traffickers in 2018, the traditional ruler informed that as Nigeria Ambassador to Rome, Italy he got closer to the then endemic problem of prostitution and human trafficking which put Africa in disrepute and bad perspective.
He added that the activities of very few women otherwise referred to as ‘Madams’ formed themselves into cartel that dehumanised, frightened and threatened their victims because of their greed, selfish and monetary interests.
He said that all these ugly trends were taken place when frantic efforts was been made to open Africa to the world, Nigeria in particular and therefore felt the strong desire that something drastic has to be done to put an end to this modern day slavery.
The monarch said the climax was when officials of NAPTIP appealed to him that the activities of these so-called ‘Madams’ was constituting hindrance to their smooth operations of the work in the state.
He was quick to inform that the positive outcome of curses revoked on human trafficking victims was mind-blowing and tremendous to the extent that it elicited commendations from International Organisation for Migration (IOM), European Union, Embassies, High Commissions, Corporate bodies, Government, etc.
