Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Akwa-Ibom state, Mr Mike Igini as claimant, is asking for N5billion as aggravated damages from Col David Imuse Rtd and Mr John Mayaki.
In the suit number B/556/2020, at the High Court, Benin, the first defendant namely Col David Imuse Rtd is the Edo state Chairman of the Edo APC Media Campaign Council while Mayaki is the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) POI Campaign Office in the 2020 Governorship Election, Edo State.
Also joined as second and third defendants in the suit are three National dailies namely the African Newspapers of Nigeria PLC, the Sun Publishing Ltd and the Vanguard Media Limited.
In his statement of claims, Mr Igini refers to a report on page 4 of Sunday Vanguard of 30th August, 2020 where the Defendant caused to be published an article about him.
He said he will be pleading and shall rely on the above publication at the trial of this suit as he avers that some persons further drew his attention to them in contemptuous manners.
Mr Igini said he wants the defendants to carry a full page unreserved apology in very edition of the Punch, Tribune, Guardian and Sun Newspapers for 7 days commencing not later than 7days after the judgement in this case.
In addition Mr Igini is asking the court for a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their agents, privies and or servants however called from further publishing same or similar words, defamatory of him.
Meanwhile, Mr Igini has said that he was not suing the APC as a party because, “very highly leaders and members of the party called me….”, “to convey their personal disapproval of the action of these two…”.#
