A 67year old American medical doctor, James Heaps, MD who could face 67 years in prison if convicted on all sexual charges against him has gotten some consolation.

The hospital where he worked for several years where the patients are accusing him of different forms of sexual abuse has opted for an out of court settlement.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the University of California system will pay $73 million under a proposed settlement in the civil case.

The settlement after seven women who said they were sexually abused by James Heaps, MD brought law suits against him.

5 patients accuse the doctor of sexual abuse, in a criminal court while in a civil suits patients accuse him of sexual assault and sexual misconduct dating back to 1893.

The Times reports that there are seven plaintiffs in the lawsuit but that over 6000 patients could be involved in the long run.

It also says that Dr Heaps faces 20 counts of felony and charges of sex crimes running over seven years from 2011.

The charges are sexual battery by fraud, sexual exploitation of a patient, and sexual penetration of an unconscious person.
